Semmelknödel, or bread dumplings, are a classic German dish that can be prepared by steaming them for a fluffy texture. This recipe provides a simple method to achieve perfectly cooked dumplings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 stale bread rolls
  • 400 ml milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 50 g butter
  • salt to taste
  • pepper to taste
  • fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. Soak the bread rolls in milk until soft.
  2. In a pan, melt the butter and sauté the chopped onions until translucent.
  3. Combine the bread mixture with eggs, sautéed onions, parsley, salt, and pepper.
  4. Form the mixture into balls.
  5. Place the dumplings in a steamer basket over boiling water.
  6. Steam for about 20 minutes until cooked through.
  7. Serve warm with your desired sauce.

Notes

  • If the mixture is too wet, add a little flour.
  • These dumplings pair well with gravies and can be served with meats.
