Osterbrot is a traditional Easter bread, rich in flavor and history.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon cardamom
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 1/4 cup almonds, slivered

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, heat milk, sugar, and butter until melted. Let cool.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, salt, lemon zest, nutmeg, and cardamom.
  3. Add the cooled milk mixture to the egg mixture.
  4. Gradually add flour and yeast, mixing until a dough forms.
  5. Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth.
  6. Let rise in a warm place until doubled in size.
  7. Punch down the dough and knead in raisins and almonds.
  8. Shape the dough into a loaf and place in a greased loaf pan.
  9. Let rise again until doubled.
  10. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 30-35 minutes.
  11. Cool before serving.

Notes

  • For best flavor, allow the bread to sit overnight before slicing.
  • This bread can be frozen for later use.
