- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup butter
- 4 eggs
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon lemon zest
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon cardamom
- 5 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup raisins
- 1/4 cup almonds, slivered
- In a small saucepan, heat milk, sugar, and butter until melted. Let cool.
- In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, salt, lemon zest, nutmeg, and cardamom.
- Add the cooled milk mixture to the egg mixture.
- Gradually add flour and yeast, mixing until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth.
- Let rise in a warm place until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and knead in raisins and almonds.
- Shape the dough into a loaf and place in a greased loaf pan.
- Let rise again until doubled.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 30-35 minutes.
- Cool before serving.
Notes
- For best flavor, allow the bread to sit overnight before slicing.
- This bread can be frozen for later use.
