Oberwalliser Käseschnitte is a traditional Swiss dish featuring layers of bread, cheese, and various toppings, baked to perfection.

Ingredients

  • 2 slices hearty bread
  • 100 grams Gruyère cheese
  • 100 grams Emmental cheese
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. In a pan, melt the butter and sauté the onions until golden brown.
  3. Layer the bread on a baking sheet.
  4. Add the sautéed onions on top of the bread.
  5. Grate the Gruyère and Emmental cheese and sprinkle over the onions.
  6. Season with paprika and salt.
  7. Bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  8. Serve hot.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use mixed cheeses.
  • Serve with a side salad for a complete meal.
