Traditional German fried pastries, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, perfect for the festive season.

Ingredients

  • 500 grams all-purpose flour
  • 100 grams sugar
  • 1 packet baking powder
  • 2 eggs
  • 100 grams butter, melted
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 liter vegetable oil (for frying)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Add the eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract, and mix until a dough forms.
  3. Cover the bowl with a cloth and let the dough rest for 30 minutes.
  4. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1 cm thick.
  5. Cut the dough into diamond shapes or use cookie cutters for desired shapes.
  6. Heat the vegetable oil in a deep pan to 180°C (350°F).
  7. Fry the dough pieces in batches until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  8. Remove from oil and drain on paper towels.
  9. Sprinkle with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

  • These pastries are best enjoyed warm.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to one week.
  • Can be coated with powdered sugar or served with dipping sauces.
