A hearty and nutritious lentil dal packed with spices and flavors.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup lentils
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 inch ginger, grated
  • 2 tomatoes, diced
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 4 cups vegetable broth or water
  • 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped for garnish

Instructions

  1. Rinse the lentils under cold water and drain.
  2. In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat.
  3. Add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.
  4. Add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown.
  5. Stir in the garlic and ginger, cooking for another minute until fragrant.
  6. Add the diced tomatoes, turmeric, coriander powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes soften.
  7. Add the lentils and vegetable broth. Bring to a boil.
  8. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 25-30 minutes or until the lentils are tender.
  9. Stir in the garam masala and lemon juice. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes.
  10. Garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.

Notes

  • For a spicier version, add chili powder to taste.
  • This dal can be served with rice or flatbread.
