Traditional Königsberger Klopse, a recipe for meatballs in a creamy caper sauce.

Ingredients

  • 500 g ground beef
  • 100 g ground pork
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 100 g white bread
  • 200 ml milk
  • 2 tablespoons capers
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 500 ml beef broth
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Soak the white bread in milk, then squeeze out excess liquid.
  2. In a bowl, mix the ground beef, ground pork, soaked bread, onion, and egg. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. Form the mixture into meatballs.
  4. In a pot, bring the beef broth to a gentle simmer and add the meatballs.
  5. Cook the meatballs for about 15 minutes until cooked through.
  6. In a separate pan, melt butter and stir in flour to make a roux.
  7. Slowly add some of the broth to the roux while stirring, then mix in the capers.
  8. Add the caper sauce to the meatballs and serve hot.

Notes

  • For a richer sauce, add a splash of cream.
  • Serve with boiled potatoes or rice.
