A traditional German herring salad made with pickled herring, vegetables, and a creamy dressing.

Ingredients

  • 300 grams pickled herring
  • 2 apples, diced
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 200 grams cooked potatoes, diced
  • 150 grams carrots, grated
  • 100 grams peas
  • 200 grams sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the diced pickled herring, apples, onion, potatoes, carrots, and peas.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix the sour cream, mayonnaise, lemon juice, salt, and pepper.
  3. Pour the dressing over the herring mixture and stir gently to combine.
  4. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving to allow flavors to meld.

Notes

  • Heringssalat is often served with rye bread as an accompaniment.
